On the dirt road leading to his farm in the French countryside, it’s hard to imagine that the bearded man with the calm gaze opening the door was once part of the world’s most famous boyband. Zayn Malik, now 32, lives a life far removed from the spotlights that shaped his youth. “I like the silence here,” he admits, while talking about the chickens, dogs, and even turtles that share the space with him. “A simple life gave me back my inspiration.”Born in Bradford, England, in 1993, to a Pakistani father and a British mother, Zayn grew up between distinct cultures. He speaks English and Urdu, and reads Arabic, traces he still carries, even though he has drifted away from the religious practices of his childhood. Before fame, he even considered becoming an English teacher.
